John O. Moseley

Dr. John O. Moseley (1893-1955), of Texas, received his B. A. degree from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, and later attended Oxford University. He received an honorary LL.D. degree from Austin College. He was inaugurated into office on October 12, 1944, as the seventh president of the University of Nevada, and served in that capacity until his resignation in 1949. After his resignation, he became a national officer for the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Scope and Content

This collection consists 1.25 cubic feet, comprised of folders and bound volumes, is arranged in two series. Series 1 consists of 14 folders of correspondence from 1945-1949, and are arranged chronologically. The folders of correspondence provide information on housing returning world war two veterans, fund raising, donors. The original letters were sent to the Board of Regents. Series 2 consists of eight bound volumes and a copy of "The Man with the Upturned Face," written by Dr. Moseley about Comstock-era miner John Mackay and the Mackay Statue on the University campus.. The bound volumes of correspondence include general correspondence with the faculty of the university, personal correspondence, correspondence with Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, but the letters are not arranged chronologically. One volume contains the scripts of three movies filmed on the university campus in the 1940s.


The John O. Moseley Papers are arranged in two series: 1. Correspondence; 2. Miscellaneous.

Routine correspondence with faculty concerning space, promotions, etc. Also included are notes concerning problems in higher education; pamphlets; and minutes of the Board of Regents.

16. Nevada Notes: 1948-1949. one bound volume University related correspondence. Includes suggested qualifications for the next president of the University of Nevada; list his achievements during his tenure as president; and copies of talks in support of higher salaries to designated audiences (labor, religious, high schools, farmers, etc.)

Personal Letters - (3 bound vols). Correspondence concerning his employment applications to other universities, family, and with administrators of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

1. Personal Manuscripts. 1948-1949. One bound vol.Primarily contains correspondence, talks, and general information on Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Also includes personal correspondence to family.

2. Speech Clippings. 1938-1948, undated. One bound vol. Publications that provided ideas for talks.
