The Library Partners program offers each Honors student a mentor in UNR's libraries. No matter what your major or field of interest is, we have a librarian who specializes in doing research in that area, and we are here to help you! Fill out this survey and a librarian will contact you with more information.
Did you attend the Thesis Research and Writing or EndNote workshops (offered to 490 and 491 students, and also as part of Spring 2009 Knowledge Center à la Carte)? Slides and handouts are now available:
Books and Articles Use the catalog to find books. Need articles too? Use an article database. Or, start your research with one of our research guides...
Research Guides Looking for a place to start a paper or project? Check out our subject research guides: you'll find links to databases for scholarly articles, electronic journals, selected web resources, and more. You can also check to see if we have a course-related guide for your class.
Subject Specialists Each academic area has its own subject specialist librarian. Subject specialists buy library materials, teach classes and workshops about doing research, and are available to meet one-on-one with students, faculty, and staff. You subject specialist is an expert in doing research in your field, and she or he is there to help you!
Citing Sources The links under "Manage Your Work" on the "Research" tab of the Knowledge Center homepage are the place to start! Look at our citation style guides for information and examples of different citations styles (APA, MLA, etc.). If you're working on your thesis or another major research project and would like a way to keep track of all your books and articles, give MyEndnoteWeb a try.
Services
Checkout All Honors students have semester borrowing privileges. If you want to keep your books after the end of the semester, renew them before they're due in your library account (use the "My Account" link from the Knowledge Center homepage) or call the Library Services desk at 682-5625. You can also renew books in person anytime the building is open.
Lockers There are 88 lockers on the first floor of the Knowledge Center just outside @One. These are available for students to rent for the semester. Request one using this form, or come to the Library Services desk for more information.
Get Books and Articles As you do research, you may come across books and articles that we don't have at UNR. Our Link+ service can get you books from other libraries in California and Nevada. Books usually arrive within 4 days. For articles (and books not available in Link+), use Interlibrary Loan. Articles usually arrive within 2-5 days and books within 2 weeks. Both services are free for students.
Computing There are computers for student use on every floor of the Knowledge Center. The @One area on the ground floor also has two specialized computer labs: one for post-production editing and one for working with data. The Dynamic Media Lab has 18 quad-core Intel Xeon Mac Pro workstations optimized for image, video, and sound editing. Expert help is available in the lab most hours or by appointment. The DataWorks Lab has computers and software for statistical analysis, GIS mapping, and more.
General Information
Hours
The Knowledge Center is generally open 7:30 AM to midnight, Monday through Thursday (we close at 6 PM on Fridays). We're open noon to 6 PM on Saturdays, and noon to midnight on Sundays. For other library hours, and for the hours of the Knowledge Center's helpdesks, check the schedule.
Study Space There are lots of places to study in the Knowledge Center. Quiet and group study spaces are both available. All floors have group study areas: study rooms on the fifth floor can be reserved, while rooms on floors 2-4 and group study booths in @One are first come first served. The fifth floor is a quiet study floor, and the Tower Reading Rooms on floors 2 and 3 are reserved for quiet study as well. There is also study space in DeLamare.
Collections We have many different collections and libraries, so be sure to note the location when you find a book you want to check out. Our main campus library is in the Knowledge Center (the Knowledge Center also houses the Basque Library). Books that say "UNR Knowledge Center" are in there on the third, fourth, and fifth floors in the general collection. The Popular Collection, KC Reference Collection, Special Collections, and KC Government Publications are also in the libary in the Knowledge Center. For music, movies, and language-instruction materials, go to the Multimedia Center on the ground floor of the Knowledge Center. Books that say UNR Knowledge Center--MARS are in our automated retrieval system. Request them in the catalog and then pick them up at the Library Services desk in the Knowledge Center. The DeLaMare Library in the Mackay Mines Building has most of our engineering, geology, chemistry, and physics resources.
Help
Help Desks The Knowledge Center's helpdesk are your first stop for research, computing, library, and technology help. Get help finding books and articles, trouble-shooting your computer, citing sources, and more at the Research and Computing Help Desk on the second floor. Then, head over to Library Services (also on the second floor) for questions about course reserves, getting books from other libraries, and MARS. When it comes time to put together your finished product--whether it's a paper, a poster, or a video--get help using @One's technology resources at the @One Help Desk. DeLaMare Library also has a reference desk where you can get help with chemistry, physics, geology, and engineering questions.
From Home If you need help from off-campus, look for the link on the Knowledge Center website. From there, you can chat with a librarian or email your question to us. You can also call the Research and Computing help desk at
(775) 682-5657 during the hours when the desk is open.
Subject Specialists If you need more in-depth help than you can get at the Research and Computing Help Desk, you subject specialist is available to meet one-on-one or give advice via email.
