Jim Jeffries

Jim JeffriesIn 1904, Jeffries vacated his title as the heavyweight champion by retiring. Jeffries spent his time farming alfalfa in California. By 1909, his physique had greatly changed. He weighed more than 300 pounds and was greatly out of shape. He stated that he would not reenter the ring. But after tireless efforts by others in the boxing community, Jeffries comes out of retirement in 1909 and agrees to fight Johnson.
