Donald Spaulding has preserved wonderful photographs that give us a nostalgic glimpse into the glamorous past of casino entertainment in Reno. Spaulding’s father, Neal, was a musician, a pianist who worked throughout the U.S. and indeed the world, with such highly recognized bands as Jack Teagarden, Joe Venuti, Jimmy Dorsey and Phil Harris. He came to Reno in 1953 and played at the Riverside with Bill Clifford’s Orchestra. There, he met and performed with the likes of Rosemary Clooney, Harry Belafonte, and Sammy Davis, Jr. As part of the culture of the time, performers often gave signed photos to band members, and Neal kept his. Don Spaulding himself is no stranger to art. He taught design, silverwork, sculpture, and ceramics at the University of Nevada, Reno, the University of New Mexico, and Pima College in Tucson. His work was displayed in the Knowledge Center’s art exhibit in 2012, “Far Out: The University Art Scene 1960-1975.”
