Circulation Code
General Borrowers
This circulation code defines the privileges and responsibilities of University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) undergraduate students, Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) classified staff, students and faculty, and University of Nevada, Las Vegas faculty.
Library cards are required for all transactions
Library cards
- UNR students and classified staff must present their UNR ID card (WolfCard) to check out library materials.
- Borrowing privileges for UNR undergraduate students are subject to current enrollment. No registration is required.
- Western Nevada College (WNC) students, faculty and staff must present their WNC library card to check out UNR materials. If you do not have a WNC library card, please visit any WNC library.
- Great Basin College students, faculty and staff must present their GBC ID card with affixed library barcode to check out UNR materials.
- Truckee Meadows Community College and other NSHE students must show a valid student identification card and proof of current enrollment to register for borrowing privileges. The student will be issued a University of Nevada, Reno library card or a barcode will be affixed to their student ID card. Borrowing privileges must be renewed each semester by providing proof of current enrollment.
- It is the responsibility of the student to keep the library informed of a current address. A student who will be absent from this address for more than two weeks must ensure that library materials are returned.
Borrowing Books
- Present your library card and the books you want to borrow at the library services desk.
- A student is responsible for all materials checked out on his or her library card until the materials are returned to the Library from which they were borrowed.
Loan Periods
- Books are checked out for 28 days.
- Books are subject to recall (after 14 days) if requested by another patron.
- Books located at a Reserve Desk have been set aside by faculty for class work. They may be checked out for a limited period of time. Loan periods are 1 or 2 hour/library use only, 2 hour/overnight, 12 hours, 3 days, and 7 days and are determined by the instructor.
- Bound journals in the Knowledge Center, Savitt Medical Library and DeLaMare Library may be checked out for three days with 2, 3-day renewals. Failure to return a journal will result in suspension of borrowing privileges.
Renewals
- Books may be renewed by accessing your library account on the Web, by telephone, or in person. However, overdue books may not be renewed by telephone if the student's total fines are more than $5.00. Books may not be renewed on the Web if they are overdue. You may renew as many times as necessary as long as no one else requests the book.
Recall of books
- All books are subject to recall if another borrower or the Reserve Desk supervisor requests the book. If a book has been recalled it must be returned no later than the date printed on the recall notice. The date on the recall notice supersedes the original due date. You will be charged $.25 per day for unreturned, recalled items.
- A borrower who may be absent from the area for more than one week must ensure that material due the library or recalled by the library during such absences is returned in accordance with library policies.
Holds and searches
- Placing a HOLD on a book reserves that book for the requestor. When the library catalog indicates that a
book is checked out, "request a hold" to prevent the book from being renewed. To request a hold:
- Display the full catalog record for the item (click the underlined title in a browse list to display the full record).
- Click the Request button at the top of the screen.
- If the book you want is missing, you may place a SEARCH on it. You will be notified by mail when the book is returned or located. If the book is not found after ten days of searching, you will be notified and an Interlibrary Loan can be initiated. In accordance with Nevada Revised Statutes, information regarding the current borrower of a book will not be disclosed.
Overdue fines and lost books
- There are no overdue fines. One overdue notice will be sent by email. The next notice emailed will be a bill for the cost of replacing the book plus a $10.00 processing fee and a $5.00 billing fee. Failure to receive a notice, for whatever reason, does not remove the responsibility for charges.
- Overdue fines are $1.00 per hour for 2 hour/overnight and 12 hour reserves and $5.00 per day for 3 day and 7 day reserves. The maximum fine is $20.00 per item, plus a $50.00 replacement fee. The fine for 1 hour reserves, which consists primarily of anatomical models, is $5.00 per hour with a maximum fine of $50 per item, plus a $100 replacement fee. No overdue notice is mailed for reserve materials, though a bill will be sent for a lost item.
- Your borrowing privileges are suspended when you have accrued charges of $5.00 or more.
- A "hold" is placed on student records with the Controller's Office when charges exceeding $10.00 are accrued in the library. A "hold" means that transcripts and registration are withheld until library charges are paid.
- Bills for overdue UNR items may be paid at the circulation desk of any UNR library. Bills that have resulted in a "hold" being placed on a student record can be paid at either the Cashier's Office or the library services desk in the Knowledge Center.
- Patrons may only pay fines at the NSHE institution where the fines originated.
